A PET IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!!
Should I buy a Male or a Female Puppy?

Many people believe that female pups are better than male pups, why?

This seems to be ingrained in peoples minds but it is NOT TRUE. Most calls are for females, yet males will make a better house pet in most cases and most breeds. Many believe that males will "mark" and "hike" and that females do not and don't display the "alpha" personality, this is just not true. Females will also "mark" territory and fight for control. In most male-female house holds the female is the boss, why do you think they are called "bitches"?

In the dog world the female is the leader of the pack, more independent, stubborn and territorial than their male counterparts. More fights happen between two females than between males. Males will most likely not fight unless it is due to a female in season. I have several males that live together very peacefully and enjoy each others company.

Males are very affectionate, attentive and demanding of more love and affection. They are much less moody than a female, as with a spayed female who can still have mood swings. Males attach to their owners, especially the female owner and are more reliable, outgoing, more accepting of other pets and take faster to children. Males are very eager to please and love praise making them easier to train but also very short on concentration because they are always ready to play. Males will be playful till the day they die where females tend to become layed back and lazy or to dignified to play ball. They would rather watch from the soft pillow on the sofa.

Females will come to you for attention, patting and belly rubs but then move to a soft comfortable spot to sleep. Where a male will want constant attention and always near you. I find this very true with my boys and is the main reason I take more males to the show ring than females.

Males will most likely get bigger than a female but in most case only by 1-2 pounds in the Mini Dachshund breed. However, you will still find in a few cases, the larger mini or small standard, as they are called, when the parents are at or just over the minimum weight for the standard. We must remember the mini was created from down sizing the standard size dachshund.

Spaying and Neutering is very beneficial to any pet and owner that is not planning to breed the dog. Neutered males will rarely (if at all) ever "hump", "mark" or "hike" if done by 5 months of age. A female however that is not spayed will have worse mood swings, regular heat cycles (which will last one month) and have every male dog for miles at your back door. Every where she goes she will leave a scent, bloody spots on furniture, beds, clothes and any thing else she lays on. It can be an owners worse "night-mare".

For your sake and your pets, spay and neuter your pets. Many breeders will require it, as I do, and it is the best thing you can do for yourself, your pet and the neighbors around you. Help control the pet population too, others will thank you for it.
